The creation and hosting of the Bethel United Methodist Church (Bethel) web page provides a means of identification and communication for the purposes of:
Providing Bethel UMC with a world identity Helping people locate the Bethel UMC physical church
- Sharing our church’s mission with the community
- Communicating vital information to the parishioners
- Sharing Christian witness
- Providing a connectional link to those who are shut-in
- Providing a connection to the world Christian community
The church council will appoint a webmaster, who will be the sole individual who may post information on the web pages. The webmaster will be responsible to the church council for enforcement of this policy.
Subject Matter- All subject matter on the Bethel pages and their links shall relate to church policy and programs, pastoral messages, Christian education and witness, missions and outreach. Individuals, staff, or other persons may not use the church’s web pages to provide access to their personal pages on other servers or online services.
Pre-Approval- Prior to hosting material, the material, by type, shall be pre-approved by the church council. Types pre-approved at this time, considering safeguards listed below, are:

Quality – All work must be free of any spelling or grammatical errors. Documents may not contain objectionable material or point directly to objectionable material. Objectionable material is determined on a case by case basis by the church council, but includes sexually explicit material, material that denigrates others as individuals or as ethnic, racial, religious, national, gender, or physically challenged groups.Personal Safeguards – Documents shall not include names, addresses, telephone numbers or social security numbers of persons without the specific written permission of the individual involved. Published e-mail addresses shall be restricted to the Bethel and webmaster addresses. No pictures of individuals will be posted on the Bethel web pages unless otherwise approved in writing by the subject. No other works of individuals may be published without the specific written release of the author. Copyright notices must be used for any permitted work that is to remain protected by the author.Intellectual Property Safeguards – Extreme care will be exercised to avoid infringing on trademarks, service marks, and copyrights. Before using any non-original material on the site, determination shall be made as to the owner of the intellectual property rights to the material, and if protected by copyright or other proprietary protection, release will be obtained in writing from the owner or agent of the owner before use.Technical Standards
Format Standards – At the bottom of the page, there must be the date of the last update of the page. Somewhere on the page, preferably at the bottom, there must be a link that returns the user to the appropriate points in the Bethel pages. This would normally be a return to the Bethel home page. Standard formatting shall be used, including HTML. Specific permission shall be obtained from the church council to use any dynamic processes such as applets.
All graphics should be in a standard format, preferably GIF. Other formats, including sound or video, may be used in special Circumstances.
Directory structure will be determined by the webmaster, following GBGM requirements.
Testing and Deployment- Each deployed page shall be edited and tested for accurate links, and to ensure that the page meets the content standards listed above. The sponsor of a page will assume responsibility for updating the information as needed. Pages may not contain links to other pages that are not yet completed. If further pages are anticipated but not yet developed, the text that will provide the link should be included but may not be made “hot” until the further page is actually in place.
Revision of Guidelines
These guidelines will be evaluated and updated as needed in response to the changing nature of technology and its application to Bethel church.
